West Regional Workshop 2023

Inside the Poly Lab/Body Lab: Whole Body Playful Learning, The Polyvagal, Neuroscience Way

Presenter: Dora Henderson, LMHC, CST, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor

Kids can get stretched to the max with their feelings and need a fun way to learn about their bodies, the senses, and regulating their nervous system.  By treating the lower brain with embodiment play, including sensory play, movement & rhythm, we can help our bodies recover and reorganize our nervous systems, to bring us back to supporting safety, thus help children learn to regulate from the BIG emotions and get back to learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the components of polyvagal theory as they relate to play therapy and the therapeutic powers of play and “felt sense.”
  2. Describe the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the play therapy process as it applies to play therapy and complex trauma.
  3. Identify 3 key aspects of the neuroception of safety and their importance in play therapy applications when working with children who have experienced trauma
  4. Articulate the “Ceptions” and demonstrate how play therapy can be utilized to teach and explore the nervous system of students and clients.
  5. Apply 10 or more play therapy techniques to assist children in regulation, stress reduction, and social interactions.
  6. Compare and contrast a bottom-up, top-down, and Autonomic Nervous System approach to play therapy.
