Utilizing Child Centered Play Therapy to Advocate and Support Transgender and Gender Expansive Children and Adolescents

presented by Rebekah Byrd, PhD, LPC, LCMHC, NCC, RPT-S and Sonya Lorelle, PhD, LPC, RPT-S, NCC

Play therapists are legally and ethically called to provide affirmative care and support for transgender and gender expansive children, adolescents, and families. Play therapists, whether working in schools, agencies, or private practices, seek to affirm all clients in a supportive and compassionate manner. This presentation will provide clinicians with information and resources for honing skills for advocating and supporting transgender and gender-expansive children and adolescents in multiple settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this workshop, participants will:

    1. describe what it means to be transgender and gender-expansive.
    2. evaluate information and resources for growing play therapy skills in this necessary area.
    3. analyze legal and ethical information specific to their play therapy settings.
    4. evaluate ways to make their play therapy setting more affirming and supportive.
    5. identify child centered play therapy skills that are effective for working with transgender and gender-expansive children
    6. discuss ways to be advocates and allies for transgender and gender-expansive individuals.

Session limited to 40 participants. | 2 APT CE | Beginner-Intermediate Level | Play Therapy Special Topics

Please note that CEs are only for APT hours.
